Diane: Onyx is softer than granite, it's similar to marble in durability. But be careful about buying Onyx at discount stores, it may be of inferior quality. To clean use gentle soap and water.

How does matte Onyx hold up against drops from metal or glass? I have found something similar to your pic above at a discount showroom, and would like to know how long it will last as well as how to clean it.

Onyx is usually much more expensive than Granite. Up to three times more in some cases.
