Sonia Rani: I suggest to brighten up the darker tones in your kitchen by using a lighter backsplash -- perhaps a tumbled travertine tile. |

Similar to the last post, we are also pairing cherry cabinets w/ choc glaze over ubatuba countertop (already decided), stainless steel appliances and a light cream/slate floor. Wondering if we should go with backsplash or extend ubatuba up the wall. We will have undercabinet lighting as well but worried there wont be enough contrast? Also wondering what colors would suit this look as far as wall paint is concerned. |

We are remodeling our kitchen and installing natural cherry cabinets. Floor will be natural oak. Backsplash will be beadboard (color to be determined), stainless appliances. Kitchen is galley style, 10 x 13. We refer ubatuba but worry it's too dark. Other choice would be St. Cecilia. Your thoughts or other recommendations? Kitchen is well lit. Thank you! |

We are getting a dark cinnamon finished cherry cabinet and were leaning towards the verde ubatuba granite top. However, we are struggling with finding a vinyl tile or laminate (tile pattern) to match it with. Our floor is too loose for ceramic tiles unforunately and I'm not able to sister much of the floor joists to tighten it up. |

We have honey oak cabinets and oak floor...both have a very strong orange hue. Our appliances are black. I was thinking that I wanted New Ventetian gold for my counters but have had several people mention uba tuba or verde peacock. I really want something to help minimize the orange tint of the floor/cabinets. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks. |

Actually this is in two bathrooms. We are going to use a mosaic backsplash of stone and glass to pull out all possible colors and tie it all together. We are tiling the back wall also using a tan or sand colored ceramic to pull out the golds & tans of the Ubatuba and lighten it up more. No windows in the bathrooms! However, I want to paint the other walls to tie it all together. Light but not too light. All of our trim is bright white so that is not an option. Any suggestions on a paint color to tie this all together? I am afraid to lose the green in the Ubatuba since everything else pulls out the other colors in the granit. We are unsure if there is a right color range that will compliment or contrast. We are open to all suggestions. I have every color swatch from Lowes and Home Depot and can not decide. But I do know it has to be the right color or it will just not work. Color suggestions? You have been a big help - thank you! |

Michael & Renae: No! You did not make a bad decision. I was thinking the Ubatuba might be too strong of a contrast between the light wood in your kitchen. But to downplay this you can have a light mosaic tile backsplash. |

Michael & Renae: Have you considered Tropical Brown for the countertop? |
|
Name: Michael & Renae | Date: 2010-02-02 23:21:42 |
We built our own bathroom vanities out of white oak stained a light to medium walnut - not as dark as oak. We have satin nickle hardware & faucets with undermount sinks - white. The floor is called Japanese Seagrass, Light, by Tarkett. It has a blend of golds, tans, chocolates, blacks, browns, light oranges and some subtle hints of light green but the overall effect is a gold/orange. We are installing Uba Tuba but cannot decide on a wall tile or back splash...Help! Any ideas? I like a smooth uniformed surface tile, nothing rough intexture. We were thinking of some type of yellowish gold wall tile with a combo of greens, creames, sand and what ever else we can find as a mosaic back splash. Or was the Uba Tuba a bad choice? Everything else we looked at made the floor s look way too orange. |

We are planning on dark brown maple cabinets with a bianco antico granite countertop. Is there too much grey in the bianco antico for the dark brown? Also, any ideas on backsplash material/colour...Would a earthy tone ceramic tile work or stainless steel/metal look tiles to maybe pick up the grey/brown. Thanks. |

We picked our granite to be Rivieria Royale and our cabinets are an off white. My thought on our backsplash would be something on the diagonal but unsure of the stone to use or how dark! We also have a new stainless steel so we were going to add some inserts to the backsplash. My biggest problem is the color of the walls. They are being texured in a very petite tuscon style. My floors are an off white with brown and gray. Tile name is Hermitage. Can you help in any way? |

Martha: Considering that you having decided on the wall color, you have quite a few options. with the white appliances and cabinets, you should go for a darker counter top. Go with a green or blue, Arcobaleno Blue or Emerald Pearl, which would look nice with yellow wallpaper. |

I like the moderator\'s suggestion of slate tiles with uba tuba granite, cherry cabinets, and gunstock floor (which is exactly what I have). But I am struggling with the contrast of the dull natural look of the slate tile against the glossy appearance of my uba tuba in certain lighting. I have a galley shaped white kitchen with light DalTile
Van Gogh floor (looks off
white with hint of a sunset).
We are replacing Wilsonart white formica with granite and I looked at UbaTuba today and thought it would look good as it seemed mostly black. My
backsplash is 4" shiny white
tile with a few black diamond
accents set in. Appliances
SS with black glass fronts,
white refrigerator to blend
in with the cabinets. After
reading all these comments it
sounds like there is more
green although the small sample I saw looked black.
This is open to my family room, light hardwood floors,
off-white linen sofas and
lots of mola pillows (reverse
applique from the Cuna Indians of Panama. These
have bright vivid colors and
designs with black. Would this granite work? Suggestions? Thanks |

I have pure white shaker style cabinets.Floors are stained concrete called Cola.(a reddish, brownish, blackish color-much like distressed leather). Ktchn is a sage color & somewhat opens up to the living area that is light tan. Applnces are stainless with some black. All hrdwre and lght fixtures are dark ORB. Husband brought home 2 pieces -ubatuba, tropic brown. Will any one of these work? Afraid that the ubatuba will look too cold and contemporary (do not want that black and white look from the eighties) & I do not know if the tropic brwn will go w/my blinding white cabinets. Was going for the look from the movie Somethings Gotta Give. Soapstone or honed granite not in our budget. Want something clean & simple that will go with shaker cabnts & rest of the house(timeless, not into fads). Please help! I cannot afford to make another costly mistake. What would be your suggestion? If I \"antique\" white the cabinets with a brown /mocha glaze, then what do you suggest for the walls? I was orig. thinking about slightly texturing the walls mixing Kiln Beige by Sherwin Williams & Sticks & Stones by Sherwin Williams. Would that be overkill on the light colors? |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-06-12 17:43:08 |
Debbie S.: Ahh, the uba tuba strikes again. Don't worry. Many people confuse Uba Tuba for a brownish color. In reality you get more of a dark green/black that you describe. Mostly due to lighting conditions when you view the slab versus what you have at home. Either way, I'm digressing. Onto the cabinets. I think you have plenty of room to play with contrast here. I would throw away the bright white as it would cause extreme contrast with the tops and make them seem even darker. A softer contrast of the antique white with MAYBE a brown/mocha glaze should work just fine. Cherry MIGHT be fine for a low contrast setting, but it will significantly shrink the visual space and may cause a clash with the green if the cherry is reddish. |

|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-03-25 10:15:28 |
Rick: The problem's origin can be from improper fabrication, or the stone itself. The latter is a bigger challenge. Some stones are coated with an enamel to make them more stain resistant and glossy looking. When the edging is cut, that enamel is gone and achieving the same finish is difficult. The way to fix this would be to have it re-polished. |

Rose : There are a few particular colors that lost their appeal because of how often they're used. I wouldn't say that dark stones are out of style. It's more of an issue of matching the stone well to the kitchen. If it looks good, then you have nothing to worry about. And Volga Blue is hardly your everyday granite. Very nice choice. |

We have been told dark colored granite is the way to go with our honey oak cabinets (which are in good condition, but 17 years old). First, is it a mistake to keep the old cabinets? Second, is the dark granite a good choice, or are the dark granites going out of style, good or bad for resale? We are also thinking of Volga Blue. The floor will be red oak as well. |

Maybe Uba Tuba isn't the wisest choice because of the contrast so I might be looking towards browns to make the room warmer with a light brown glaze on the cabinets. Thanks you so much for your input!! |

Jan: I think keeping it white might be the easiest way to go. It won't be easy to introduce another color there because of the high contrast that you already have between the tops and the cabinets. |

I have a galley kitchen w/ white cabinets & would very much like to have uba tuba but am finding it extremely difficult to find a backsplash and floor that compliments the uba tuba. Currently I have white 4" polished tiles as a back splash. Any suggestions you can give would be extremely helpful. |

Wendy: It could work. The key thing in that scenario would be selecting the proper version of uba tuba. They come in all shades of green and black. I would get one that has no white spots in it. |

Janis: It should go well with pale tumbled marble or travertine. The difference in textures will enhance the colors. |

Jane: There are many variations of Uba Tuba. I'm sure you'll be able to find a darker version. |

I have medium hickory cabinets and hardwood floors. I really love the Santa Cecelia granite and plan on having it installed on the 'perimeter'. However, I'd like to do my island in an opposite/coordinating granite. I was thinking uba tuba could work. Do you have any suggestions? |

Looking at uba tuba for counters. lower cabinets
are green(sage) and uppers are white. Wanted some black, tops, not a lot of green. Do you think that uba tuba would be too much green. I also have green walls. I am also installing glass mosaic tiles
with a honey blend (greens, honey, & white) Any other suggestions for the counter top color? |

Cori: Well you are concerned about the right thing :) The green in the countertops and the red/orange of the floors might clash quite badly. I'd suggest something like the Platinum Bahia if you are set on a dark color. |

audrey: That is right Audrey. Black galaxy, even though it is very easy to clean, will require cleaning very often. Because of its nearly flat black surface, it will show dirt a lot more than stones with a more varied pattern. |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2008-04-05 10:35:05 |
audrey: To some degree yes. Emerald Pearl is a dark green with blue highlights. It looks very dark, almost black. I think that even though you might not be able to put red accents in the room, you certainly are not limited to use warm yellows, and even some blues. So my choice is Emerald Pearl. Also, Black Galaxy is a nightmare to keep clean. It shows dirt a lot. |

Deb: As I said in the other comment, Uba Tuba is definitely a green color. With reddish cabinets it won't look so good. |

I will have toffee coloured maple shaker cabinets, and white floors. I am so torn between having emerald pearl or black galaxy. I am not sure what colour backsplash to go with either. Am I limiting myself to greens if I go with emerald pearl? |

I have medium cherry cabinets with a coffee glaze. I like the look of dark granite because I want an interesting mosaic back splash. Floor is oak. I keep coming back to uba tuba. My accents in the kitchen are colorful, so it seems like dark granite would be a nice back drop. overhead can lights, undercabinet lights, and pendant lighting. |

I like this photo, but wasn't sure how the low lighting and full granite backsplash would affect the look. I was also wondering how the pastels in the wall paper would work with the granite. Thanks again. |

Would uba tuba counter & backsplash go with warm-white painted cabinets ? (floor tile is warm white. wall paper backround is warm white with pastel (peach, green, yellow, pink) fruit baskets). Kitchen has a northern exposure. Thanks. |

I have a breakfast bar - against a stud wall, which has four cupboards at one side to support the weight of the granite - but the other side is open around 4ft with two s/s legs to support it. Can i put a long slab of granite along this wall with two legs supporting the open space? would there be problems being against a stud wall? Thank you. |

I have new Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets in maple in the honey spice color.
I like the Rosewood granite--would that be a good choice for a countertop. Or should I go with something more dramatic like a green shade. I want something I won't get tired of and that has the natural pattern in it and maybe several colors that I could use to accent. |

We are looking for a granite color to match our golden oak floor, maple cabinets in a light to medium stain, and tan tiled backsplash. I feel that a black color with a splash of gold would be best. We really liked peacock gold but the new shipments have too much green. Can you suggest a color we should try? |

Take a look at our galleries of completed project to get some ideas about color schemes, look through a video section for more inspirations and play with our 2D showroom tools to try out your different color schemes and idea and then use our stone selector tool to look for the right combinetion of grnaite colors with the cabinets. |

That depends of the style of the kitchen. Stainless steel will look good with everything. Slate sink may fit in nicely especially if your kitchen is a little country styled. |

I love this style, not too much of the marble effect which I don't like. Do you have something similar with more beige and brown tones - possibly a bit lighter? Cabinets are oak - well lit kitchen, hardwood floors - lighter color. Rest of house has brown tones |

I think I understand now. I brought home a sample which the quarry person told me was uba tuba green (or "verde"). It looks mostly black which is fine with me. I was worried that my eyes were deceiving me. I guess the bottom line is not what it's called but how it looks to me, right? Thanks! |

Susan: Uba Tuba has many variations depending on which quarry it came from. We don't usually assign any specific names to these though. All of them will have varying degrees of black and green. |

Pam, cast iron will need extensive support. It cannot be installed by just anchoring it to the granite like you would with a stainless steel sink. So I'm leaning towards stainless steel as well. |

I have oak cabinets and are planning on getting the Uba Tuba counters. Would you suggest having a black cast iron sink or satin finish stainless steal sink with it? I'm leading towards the stainless steal fixtures with the gold tones. Thanks! |
