Darlene: The key with tile backsplash is regular cleaning, and cleaning up spills & dirt as soon as they occur. The stone must also be regularly sealed once a year or so, but this also applies to granite countertops. |

Thank you, but doesn't the tile require more upkeep? |

Darlene: I'd say to tile the backsplash with a tumbled marble or travertine, it will look great and cost less than doing a full granite backsplash. |

I am contemplating installing granite countertops but am unsure as to whether to use granite as the backsplash also. What are your thoughts on this? |

Ellen (different): Take a look at stones from the Giallo family (giallo vicenza, giallo fiorito, giallo feranza) |

Kim: No need to go orange. Try stones like Bianco Romano, Valley White, Colonial Gold... You'll get plenty of good contrast from either of these and won't have to worry that they'll blend with the cabinets. |

binu: Go with the kashmir white. Its pure, clean look will keep in the modern style, yet still complement the red cherry. Good choice. Take a look at a better picture of it: http://www.marble.com/stone/Shiva,Kashmir,White,403.html |

Ellen: Although Santa Cecilia might not be a wild choice, it would certainly make the kitchen lighter and more spacious. To get more punch out of it, you would need to use a really light color, much like it's shown above. So my choice would be a darker color. I can sacrifice some space for more punch. |

The kitchen is not huge and there are 3 windows. Sunlight comes in the afternoon. I am torn between going dark - black pearl or going light somthing like Santa Cecilia.... I appreciate any suggestions. |

Ellen: Lets start with the basics. How big is the kitchen? How much light do you get? Any favorite colors? |

We are installing kraftmaid maple praline stained cabinets. I can\'t decide on a countertop. Suggestions... I am so confused. |

margaret: I think the darker option would be more appealing. It creates more separation from the wood and therefore becomes more of a focal point. |

To add to my earlier message, would Baltic Brown be agood option if I wanted to go with a darker granite. My appliances black with a metallic black Blanco sink. |

ConfusedJo: I wouldn't be too worried. Nowadays, the natural stone care products are very advanced and provide a very good protection, even for lighter stones. Check out Stone Tech Pro (now part of Dupont). |

I ended up with a very dark, espresso like maple cabinets and having a hard time choosing a granite color. I have 3 very young kids. I am thinking of a lighter granite to lighten the kitchen up but afraid of them being easily stained. Cream floors and no backsplash yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Thank you. I will begin looking at the darker colors and will get back to you. |

Tracie: Let's tackle the color first. I would advise you to look at darker colors. Possibly something like the Giallo Veneziano. In regards to staining. Yes, the lighter colors are more susceptible to staining. It doesn't happen in an instant, but since you have little children, you can never be sure. |

Also, can you tell me your thoughts on staining with regard to light granite? I've read online to be careful of the lighter granite due to possible staining....is this true? We have many little kids - so, I want to make sure that we're not stuck with something that's going to stain easily. |

I was afraid you were going to say that. I\'m having a terrible time picking out the right color. What would you suggest to go with \"Autumn\" maple (which is a little dark) with a ebony glaze? Do you have any suggestions? |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2008-01-16 09:52:13 |
Tracie: No, sorry. That's not your typical combination of colors. |
