Laura: That's a classic combination, but in the end its down to preference. A shade of green for the walls will suffice, make it light though. |

The house we purchased has cherry cabinets and verde butterfly granite. That combo seems to clash to my eye and it all feels dark. What do you think? Can you suggest a paint color? Should I go with green paint so I don't fight the verde butterfly, or should I do something else to downplay the green tones? |

Rose: The reason for dark granite is simple – it's easy to create contrast. As for light granite suggestions, try something like Zeus, Bianco Romano, Ambrosia Gold.. to name a few. Don't get too frightened by the intense patterns. They tend to look a bit more tame when cut to regular depth counters. |

The suggestion for Uba Tuba or Butterfly (with gold tones) sounds good for a dark granite. We are also considering a lighter, white granite called Juparana White (White/Black/Red) and are wondering if that, or something like that, would go with our honey oak cabinets, since the current trend in home magazines show white marble countertops. The white granite seems to make our kitchen brighter. Do you have a suggestion for a white granite that would go well, or do you think the dark granite looks the best? |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-05-26 09:54:59 |
Rose: See if you can find a very warm Uba Tuba or Butterfly. They have a lot of gold and brown specks in them which would warm the kitchen up and tie in with the wood. |

We were originally thinking of adding Volga Blue to our Honey colored Oak cabinets. We are concerned about it being too dark, since our kitchen does not get a lot of natural light. Now we are looking at green granites--Verde Maritaka, Atlantic Green, Hawaiin Green or Uba Tuba (in the same family as Peacock Green). I also saw a very light green called Verde Cascada. I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m not sure if we should go with the blue- toned greens or with the swirled granites because of the grain in the oak. I want something that will appeal to the majority of people, and will look good with our cabinets. We are open to suggestions. |

arnie: By using a light backsplash, you could add even more contrast to the countertops. Not sure if you need any more though. It should be rather strong against the white cabinets. I think the red has to go, regardless of the backsplash. I just don't see what it's going with. I would play with the colors in the stone itself for backsplash ideas. Maybe a nice slate could work there with a sage'ish paint on the wall? |

We have a persian blue granite counter top and island top. We are looking for backspash ideas. The room is bright with all white cabinets and white crown molding. The floor is honey oak and the walls are a medium dark red. The walls can be changed to anything if necessary. The backspash is the big decider now. |

I am looking at blue pearl granite countertops in my kit. I have honey oak cabinets and ceramic tile floors that are white with gray and pink undertones. I want to do a dark burgandy walls with antique white crown molding. Will the blue pearl be too dark or would a white color be better? I have kids and a husband that are not very tidy. I don't want it to show dirt. What would you advise? |

We need to update our kitchen and I've started to look at granite counters. We found a similar-looking granite called Volga Blue. Our current cabinets are 17 years old and are Honey Oak. They are in good condition. Would it be a mistake to put new granite on our cabinets? Our beige ceramic tile floor is being replaced with red oak to match the other flooring in our house. |

I had the same concern, reason for considering a different backsplash. The kitchen has reasonable amount of light, it is open to the breakfast room, with a large bay window, and addl. side window, all facing south. The cabinets are the traditional mahogany color. I have photos available, is there a way to post/send? |

A: Verde Peacock might get a bit too dark with the dark cabinets. How much light do you have in the room? Also, is the wood reddish in color? |

We are in the process of a face lift for our kitchen. Current cabinets are dark cherry/mahogany finish. We are looking at a verde peackock granite and black appliances. The wall color is warm cream with a peach undertone, any ideas on backsplash and sink options? I think a stainless sink will not match, and black will be too much, plus it shows dirt. |

Anna: Since you cook a lot, marble is absolutely NOT an option. Delicate is one thing, but more importantly it is very porous and will stain almost immediately. Some granites to look at would be Bianco Romano, Bianco Cardinale, and maybe Milky White or Kashmir White. |

Can you recommend a granite countertop for white cabs, light maple floors, and SS appliances? I have an old home, so I want traditional - honed and less spotty maybe? We have old oak trim in a dark brown (with a bit of red). You can see a lot of it from the kitchen. I'm worried a honed absolute black on white cabinets will be too much contrast. |

You have couple of options for your backsplash. 4" granite bacsplash and plain wall. Full granite backsplash - you have to be careful here because it may look too heavy for some kitchens. Ceramic tile backsplash. I would reccomend tumbled marble or durango. It will look good with your cabinets and bring a lighter accent to the kitchen. |

I love the built in table look. Do you have pictures of others? Would my builder create the base/stand or would you?

We have bright white cabinets with brown hardwood floors and a tan/orange back splash. Which granite would you recommend that we look at? |

Earnestine :
Crema Bordeaux looks very good with cherry, Giallo will be more uniform and simpler. |

I am buying a home with oak cabinets and a light grey ceramic tile floor. I really love the blue pearl. Which would look better - leaving the cabinets oak or painting them white? |

Break it up. You have similar tones in the cabinetry and the floor. It would be nice to choose something either significantly lighter or darker than the rest of the kitchen. Maybe a really dark Giallo Firenza. |

I'm in the process of picking out a slab of granite for my kitchen counter, and I'm not sure about the color. My cabinets are made of birch and the color is more on a golden maple color. My floor is porcelain and has tan, brown and orange swirls in it. What color granite do you suggest? |

Tough one Lydia. Looks like the countertops were not taken care of at all. Definitely pass on the carrera marble. Blue pearl is not a bad idea. Try to get a light one (they vary a lot). It will look more silver than blue. |

I am buying a house with pretty dark blue cabinets and they have bianco romano tops now. I don't like these counters as they are full of rust marks. I was thinking of carera marble or blue pearl, but maybe blue pearl would be too much blue? Back splash is white subway tiles. Any suggestions? |

I downloaded the 3D showroom and choose a black, honed countertop which was described as the darkest black available. It didn't give a name nor a number. What would the name be?
Thank you.

My question to you TDL is what are you looking for in the sink? Aesthetics or practicality? I would probably stay away from the black, just because it will make a "black hole" in the countertops. |

We are looking for the right sink to go with Verde Butterfly. We are torn between black and SS. Which would you recommend? And if black, would you recommend black faucet? |

Do you have a suggested granite for natural maple cabinets and a blue-gray tile floor? We were thinking something on the darker side to provide a little contrast. |

Sharon, if you're doing new cabinets, fax us the plan with dimensions. If you are just replacing the tops, measure the existing cabinets yourself and make a very simple drawing. Fax that over to us, and you'll get the price. |

Paula, this granite is definately more green than black. I guess it all depends how well it is lit. The more light you put on it the more color is going to show up. |
