  • Marble.com - Derek 07:58PM, Sep 28 2011 The illumination is not necessary, its a purely aesthetic component and totally optional. The higher degree of maintenance depends on the gemstone that you pick. Most of the gemstone slabs are put together with epoxy that "sticks" together the individual pieces of gemstones in the slabs, and the epoxy can scratch and has a melting point. The gemstone itself will not stain, etch, or scratch. Gemstones can be used for kitchen countertops, but they are not recommended by us for heavy use. Hope this helps.
  • Tangie 02:14AM, Sep 28 2011 I've seen photos that have back illumination. Is that necessary? Will it endure the life of the kitchen? What does higher degree of maintenance mean?
  • Marble.com - Derek 04:59PM, Sep 27 2011 It's possible to be used in a kitchen countertop, however it's a very premium material that requires a higher degree of maintenance. We have the gemstones in-stock at our Ridgefield Park, NJ facility. They're truly breath taking, come take a look!
  • Nelafreitas 04:36AM, Sep 24 2011 Is this gemstone practical for a kitchen counter top?  Is it available for at the Danbury, CT location?
