Marble.com - Derek 12:20PM, Jun 22 2011 I would not recommend to use gemstone as a countertop material in a high traffic work area such as the kitchen. As Kinga mentioned, gemstone is more decorative than durable and granite is a much safer and more viable option. Hope this helps.

Gemstones are decorative surfaces for fireplaces, columns and so on. People have used them in kitchens and bathrooms but the material is very soft and can scratch very easily. Granite is by far the best option to use for kitchens. It’s practical, durable, heat and scratch resistant and very easy to maintain.
