You do not have to match appliances to your countertop. Appliances are their own element in the kitchen that do not and usually are not incorporated into the design color scheme. You should always compliment and take into consideration your cabinets, floor, backsplash and paint while picking your granite.

• Irishroses 07:06PM, Aug 8 2011 I believe you are correct that the altair is too dark. The original granite that we found, we can no longer find. It was absolutely beautiful, creamy background like your Crema Marfil with veins of gold, burgundry and black running through it. I think it was called Belle Solle, it was supposed to be Italian, but I cant find it any more and havent seen anything else like it that would go well in our kitchen that was light colored.
• Marble.com - Derek 02:09PM, Aug 8 2011 For the backsplash, I recommend a tumbled marble tile, such as the Botticino or Crema Marfil variety. I've attached images of these choices for your reference. You can also insert a beautiful design mural behind the stove, I've attached an idea that I personally enjoy very much. As for the granite countertop piece, the Altair may be a bit too dark. However if you focus on the rich golden veins of the stone and really show them off in the design, then it can look absolutely stunning. I recommend to look at the slabs in-person and bring your cabinet door with you to put it against the slab. A choice that is a tad lighter and may work better is Kosmus. Good luck!

• Irishroses 05:37PM, Aug 5 2011 We are at the tail end of remodeling our kitchen and need help with the countertop and the backsplash. Our cabinets are cabernet with black glaze, our island is glossy black paint with the drawers and doors cabernet stain w/ black glaze. We have all black appliances. We are waiting to install a black chimeny style range hood until we get the backsplash put in first. Our walls are a light sage green, with traditional style wallpaper that includes colors of rust, gold, cream, lavender. The ceiling is gold faux with brushed pearl. We have custom lighting by kenroy and it has like a gold pearlessence look with silver veins running throughout. The floor is a light cherry.  We are looking to create somewhat of a Tuscany feel in the kitchen. I know we want a light tile in the kitchen to help brighten it a bit, maybe even a design or a accent piece to go over the stove. I initially wanted a light colored granite (more creamy background) with some gold, burgundy and some black. However, I did see the Altair and that REALLY rocks...!! I dont know if that would make the kitchen too dark or what? Right now we have the light cherry laminate flooring, but intend to put light ceramic tile in later. We also have various types of metal colors throughout the house. Fixtures are all bronze. Current countertop are a sage green speckled laminate w/ a black sink. I am trying to pick both the countertop and tile now, but want to install the granite countertop at a later date. So I need a tile that will go with what we have now, and then be ready for the new countertop in the future. We just cant afford to both at the same time right now. Would be happy to post pictures. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated as we are totally spinning our wheels here. Thanks KL

Before you make any final decisions, it is crucial that you look at the slabs in-person and bring samples home with you to see the stones next to your cabinet under your kitchen lightning effects.

He loves movement and "wood" cabinets!  So, we will do one of the darker cabinets you've suggested. Both are beautiful.  And Altair on the island with a lighter granite on the perimeter. Will any of the lighter ones you've suggested previously work and not clash with Altair?

However, I think it would look stunning if you kept the dark cabinets on the perimeter and the island because a unique stone like the Altair will stand out even against a dark base. I’ve seen Altair done with chocolate brown and jet black cabinets and it looks jaw-dropping! If you do a light perimeter stone and Altair on the island keeping the wood consistent throughout, you will definitely achieve a magazine-style kitchen. Since your husband likes the look of wood, consider doing walnut oak or dark cherry cabinets with espresso glaze. Let me know what you think!

I think my husband would go for the oak or maple with the chocolate glaze since they are "wood" in his eyes. He just doesn't wanted painted cabinets even though I think they are beautiful.  I'll check out the lighter suggestions Derek suggested if we stick with the dark cabinets.  I've had another thought today. How would it be to have darker cabinets and lighter granite on the perimeter and the maple with chocolate glaze cabinets with the altair on the island?  Is that too busy or too "much" going on?

If very dark cabinet wood is used, the Altair can stay on the island, but for the perimeter a lighter and warmer color is a must for contrast. My perimeter recommendations are Astoria, Santa Cecilia Light, Giallo Ornamental C.

White or black cabinets are always in style so if you want to keep the space timeless, consider either one with a contrasting granite.

I think you should consider doing lighter on your cabinets like an off white with a chocolate glaze and pair it with the Absolute Black on the perimeter and Altair on the island. This look is very timeless, classic and elegant. If you’re set on darker cabinets, the perimeter should be light like Kashmir Gold or Madura Gold paired with the Altair for the island.

• Jwilke19 06:17PM, Jul 30 2011 We are in the middle of a kitchen and master bath remodel.We are thinking we would like something like Altair for the 5 X 6 island and then a more solid color for the perimeter of the kitchen. Although the cabinet color is not definite, I am thinking of a brownish-blackish color. If we put something like Absolute Black or any black on the perimeter, will this be too dark? The floor will be some kind of tile in a lighter color as well as the backsplash. The kitchen is fairly large, but has no window. There are windows in the breakfast area though and we've added a solar tube. I'm so confused as what granite and cabinet colors to go with it. I want something classic, traditional, elegant. Any help will be appreciated.

But it might be hard to appreciate the beauty of the stone because a vanitytop is not usually very large to show the veins of this stone. And the Rainforest Brown tile I would say is a busy pattern, the Altair might add to the busy feel and make the space a little overwhelming. If you do not feel it's too busy, then you should go for it as it's a beautiful stone.
