  We are putting Giallo Ornamental Dark granite in. Our floors are Country Walnut at Home Depot, and we are refinishing our golden oak cabinets into a much deeper shade. What would you recommend for a backsplash and for paint colors?
• Marble.com - Derek 07:20PM, Jan 31 2012 My suggestions for you would be to add a rich colored accent wall, such as the burgundy shade visible in the pictured I've attached to my response (the Giallo Ornamental is used here). For the backsplash tile, to make the kitchen a focal point of your home, I'd say to look at interesting natural stone tile murals for over the stove such as the "Archway to Venice", I've attached a picture to show you what I mean. • Nemery 03:07AM, Jan 27 2012 I think I will end up chosing the Giallo Ornamental granite.  I am drawn to the lighter tones in it, but can visualize the pop that a contrasting dark counter top would offer.
  
  I am working out the color for the cabinets, but they will be glazed in a brownish tone with a neutral Ivory- med. beige base coat.  
  
  The floor is a ceramic tile that does a great job of looking like real stone.  It is a light medium neutral color overall with to medium to dark colorations.  I want to achieve a light, fresh, natural look without being boring.  Can you make any suggestions to help me reach my goal without falling short.

A maroon shade of color is appropriate, and these choices, or something similar, should satisfy your desire for such a tone. I feel that a blue tone would be too cold for your design. • Terri 01:35AM, Nov 12 2011 Hello!  We are remodeling our kitchen and have chosen Giallo Cream for the granite countertops.  The cabinets will be alder with a cappuccino stain, and the floor will be Genoa Marini.  We are confused what color to paint the kitchen and dining room walls.  It is an open-concept that flows right into the dining area.  Should we paint both rooms the same color, and should we go dark or light?  Also, what colors complement all these brown tones?  Can we go with a blue or maroon?  Any suggestions will be so appreciated!

  We are renovating our kitchen which is a totally open plan design with our living&dining room.  Our floors are a light to medium brown.  Our cabs will be either antique white or cream.  We like the Giallo Ornamental for countertops but don't know what would look best for backsplash.  We have transitional/traditional taste - don't like modern but don't want too old either. Maybe a tan'beige basketweave or a similar shade of plain glass tile?  Any suggestions are very welcome.

For the backsplash, I'd use a glass tile as the one I've attached to my response. It's called Candlelight Atmosphere Collection. Let me know what you think of it.

However, I’m learning towards the Giallo Ornamental countertop as it would create a much warmer and more inviting feel. The Kashmir White may feel slightly cold against the white cabinets and blend a bit too much. I feel the Giallo Ornamental will give you a beautiful contrast, warmth and balance in the space so my vote is still the Giallo Ornamental.

  One more wrinkle - my wife brought home a sample of Kashmir White, and we really like it.  What do you think of using it as alternative to Giallo Ornamental with our white cabinets?  Here are our current options:

  White Dove cabinets
  Travertine backsplash (likely the lighter Durango with this option)
  
  or
  
  Kashmir White counters
  White Dove cabinets
  Travertine backsplash (likely a warmer Noce with this option)
  
  
  Floors are traditional oak in a medium golden-brown.
  
  I'd love to hear you professional opinions.

• WS 03:03PM, Oct 20 2011 Thanks for your help.  I think you have gone three for three.  In the past 12 hours we have leaned much more toward the whiter white - the cabinets are in production, so the decision has to be made soon.  We both like the Giallo Ornamental and we just want to be sure it pairs well with White Dove.  We feel like the travertine backsplash will add some warmth without being too dark.  Our only remaining "battles" are  the tile pattern and tumbled (my preference) vs. honed (my wife's preference).  Oh, and a nice beige for the walls...

Either way, believe it or not, I truly feel like you're on track and have a strong head on your shoulders. I'm leaning toward the stark white cabinet color for an elegant and sharp design that accentuates clean lines. Add in the always sharp and classic Giallo Ornamental and a tumbled Noce travertine tile, perhaps in a Versailles pattern, for the backsplash and you're good to go. Let me know what you think.
• WS 11:29PM, Oct 19 2011 We are picking our cabinet paint color, our countertops, and our backsplash, simultaneously.  We seem to have wound up in an endless loop.  For paint, we go between Benjamin Moore White Dove (very white) and Benjamin Moore Linen White (creamier).  We really like Giallo Ornamental because it is relatively consistent, light, and beige/gray rather than yellow.  For our backsplash, we like creme/tan travertine subway tiles or traditional ceramic subway tiles (somewhere in the white to off-white range). 
  
  Unfortunately, all these decisions depend on all the other decisions.  If we settle on Giallo Ornamental, will it go well with both the white white and the creamy white? Or, should we pick white white or creamy white and then pick Giallo Ornamental or some alternative granite that works better with the paint? Does the backsplash affect these decisions.  Overload!  Any thoughts would be helpful.

  We have oak hardwood flooring and pure white kitchen cabinets. The walls are painted a subtle
  soft yellow. The appliances are black and stainless. The only window faces south, better light in winter, shade in summer, so it tends to be dark.  The sink will be black granite.  I like Giallo Santa Cecilia for a countertop, but my husband likes either NVG, GO, or one with blue flecks.  We plan to use a light beige Lugano tumbled look tile back splash, with geometric stone border across the middle.Hardware and faucet are brushed stainless.

Make sure to compare the two granite's in person and look at the full slabs to make your final decision! As for backsplash tile, take a look at a light 1" x 2" cut split-face natural travertine mosaic, that would look beautiful against your choices! I've attached an image for your reference. Good luck!

In my opinion, Blue Eyes is the safe and effective choice because of it's consistent pattern, grey shades with blue flecks and brown undertones. The 'Silver Waves' has the color palette you're interesting in and a dramatic, interesting veined pattern. Not much in the way of browns, but it could work nicely in your design. • Marble.com - Kinga 11:54AM, Aug 24 2011 For a blue and white theme, Sapphire Blue would tie your wood elements while introducing the blue tone that you like and painting your walls for example Benjamin Moore’s “Snow White” or even “In Your Eyes” would create the look you are after. There are other blue options like Azul Aran and Blue Bahia but you have to keep in mind that such blue granites tend to be much more expensive. Also check out Tan Blue, Baltic Blue and Blue And Black. For backsplash ideas, a natural tumbled marble with glass inserts or ceramic tile resembling natural stone would be a fantastic addition. • Gwen Halsey 05:31AM, Aug 21 2011 Hi!  I have oak (light reddish brown and marbled looking) cabinets.  They are a nice wood but a little 80's country kitchen for me.  I can't afford to replace them.  The floor is cream tiles.  I prefer cool colors (whites, greys, blues) to warm (not into any goldish or orange or green counters).  There is a lot of wood in the connected great room so wondering if need to tie it in w some brown flecks in the granite, despite my cool palette preferences?  Also would like suggestions for tile backsplash (current but classic and not pricey)?  RIght now it is painted sage (green) but I am pricing changing that.  I want to have a blue and white theme in the kitchen (have blue and white china to hang on the walls) so open to even paint color suggestions if you do that.  I would treasure your help!

I feel like it's the centerpiece of your design and the granite should pick up your Montagna Belluno tile. With that being said, the New Venetian Gold has undertones that will pick up these aspects in your design, so I also pick the NVG.

However, I feel that the New Venetian Gold would be a better choice. I actually took both Giallo Ornamental and the NVG samples side by side and the NVG feels richer and seems to have more depth. The NVG is a popular choice with many designs because it’s very neutral and easy on the eyes. So my vote is for the NVG!
• Sherry 05:02PM, Jun 21 2011 We are putting cabinets with mission oak stain, satin wood die, and walnut highlights. (They are dark, but highlighted.) The tile is Montagna Belluno from Home Depot. It varies with browns, tans, ivories and a little orange. I chose the NVG and then changed to Giallo Orn. Went by the granite place yesterday and am 2nd guessing! Which do you think would go better? The fixtures are all delta victorian venetion bronze. Please help!!!

I have stopped at a couple of other granite places to look at their samples of Giallo Ornamental and they do not look like what I have in my kitchen. One person said that there is no green in Giallo Ornamental. Thanks.

It doesn't seem likely since our stones our labeled. However, it sounds like you are happy with your countertop regardless of what stone it is called.
• Penney 04:55PM, Jun 1 2011 Does Giallo Ornamental have spots of green in the granite? I recently had granite countertops installed and they are beautiful. However, when I picked out the granite, the guy told me it was Giallo Ornamental and when I picked out my slab, the sample of Giallo Ornamental I had in my hand didn't look close to the slab I picked out. The colors in the slab were the light background with black, garnite, gray, brown and green. When I was looking at the samples in the showroom, the slab looked more like Bianco Romano than Giallo Ornamental. Could the salesman have made a mistake? Thanks.

Both of those stones are "Giallo Ornamental" family of stones, but different batches of it, so there is slight change in color tone and pattern. I's best to compare the samples side to side.

In this set-up it comes down to the floor, what kind of floor do you have? If your floor has any brown or tan tones, then i'd use one of your first three choices, probably the Giallo Ornamental.
• Karen 08:42PM, Jan 23 2011 We are trying to decide between Ornamental and NVG for our kitchen. Our cabinets are oak with a medium cherry stain and the floors are a light cream colored tile. We have all SS appliances. It took me forever to find a neutral beige to paint the walls....every color that I tried looked peachy, until I found a beige with more yellow in it and no red. The walls are now a pretty medium gold/beige. I'm not a fan of a lot of gold, but would like to give the room some warmth. Which counter top would you recommend?

First thought I'd go with dark countertops (ubatula, Antique Butterfy) ,however,when I brought home samples they looked too dark. Now leaning toward Venetian Gold or GalloOrnamental. I'm still leaning towards the Ubatuba to contrast the honey cabinets and white appliances, but since you have no natural light and it's a small space it might make the kitchen too dark. If this is the case, then go with the Ornamental.

The floors are a porcelain travertine look tile, the appliances are white, the cabinets a honey oak and the backsplash is painted a tomotoe red. There is no natural light, and it is a small space. I can get a good price on the following stones: Black pearl, tan brown, giallo ornamental and ubatuba. Any suggestions would help.

• Vanessa 07:47PM, Jan 29 2010 Hello again! Please settle a difference of "expert" opinion. I went to 2 diff granite places & asked about Giallo Ornamental. Specifically, I asked if GO has the dark garnet flecks in it - the one place had GO which had dark red flecks, so the answer was yes. The other said no. Could this be because of the different lots they have? Looking at your website, the GO does not appear to have garnet in it, yet a finished kitchen I saw did have it. The reason I ask is that I think I have found GO with garnet in it (potentially at least from the picture). I am sure as with any slab, it changes over time and what one store thought didnt have garnet in it, might now, correct? As I mentioned before, the NVG samples seem to be too gold for my taste and I thought that the GO would be a good compromise. Can you shed some light on this "million dollar" question for me? I would like to be able to get a good night's sleep by next Tuesday!!! ;) As always, much appreciated!
  • All Granite and Marble 01:52PM, Feb 1 2010 Vanessa: No one is right or wrong in this situation, granite is a confusing and tricky business. It all boils down to which quarry mined the stone, and the difference between batches. The Giallo Ornamental that we have in stock has garnet flecks, and usually it does, but it's possible that the other fabricator has a stone of the same name that does not have these flecks. This is why it's important to actually see and approve the slab(s) will be fabricated for you.

Walls will be beige, floors are light maple hardwood, appliances are SS. I was set on New Venetian Gold but the lot # I liked is no longer available. It was much lighter/whiter than the current lots (current ones are very gold). So, I went to look at Giallo Ornamental. The slab they showed me was very BROWN. I want the neutral looking Giallo that has those nice garnet flecks/speckles in it. Does Giallo Ornamental come this way and will this go well with my dark red cherry cabinets? Or should I go back to NVG??? I have analysis paralysis right now (and a very bad headache :) ) Thank you!

I can assure you that Giallo Ornamental compliments dark cherry cabinets beautifully, as does NVG. If the NVG you're looking at is gold do not worry, gold in your set-up will make the kitchen warm and inviting. I'm leaning towards the NVG if the slabs of Ornamental are dark and brown.
• Ed 05:44PM, Jan 13 2010 sorry. don't know how to cut and paste, but it's the Minwax website, click on stains, then click on 22 stain colors. Provincial is a little lighter than "dark walnut". I think you are right about the better contrast with "dark walnut".

We are thinking a lighter travertine for the backsplash with a border tha that has light,med and dark squares to tie it in or bronze orion squares periodically. Would it be a mistake to go with a dark floor? I found a dark tile i like. It is called praire dust? Each tile is a slightly different shade, but darker. I can't decide if it is better to go lighter. • Joan 10:45AM, Dec 18 2009 We have brought samples home (Minwax) of stain home from Home Depot, and none of them are the "dark cherry" or even close to it. Their colors called "red oak" & "red mahogany" are a brown color. Can you suggest some brands and colors of stain that would give me that "dark cherry", "spice" or "cranberry glaze" look? Perhaps it would have to be a stain from somewhere other than Home Depot. We are frustrated bringing home so many stains and staining the oak wood we are using for our bathroom cabinets. Oak is a very hard wood & does not take stain very well except for the pores & dark grain. You might wanna try gel stain or even a poly/stain over that to get the rich color of cherry that you are looking for. Oak grain and cherry grain are hardly sisters. Oak is tightly, contiguous grained while cherry is varigated grain with random wide fields of no grain. So it won't look like cherry unless you mask it entirely which would be a waste of warm oak beauty. I didn't know you had already purchased an oak vanity. We think this will create more natural light. We really like the look of the Giallo Ornamental and feel it will continue to "lighten the room". We are debating between a cherry cabinet or a honey tan cabinet. We've seen many pictures of the cherry and the contrast looks nice. That said, we're looking for a more modern look. You have to look at the different Santa Cecilia's in our yard though as every batch looks slightly different. I suggest bringing a cabinet sample when you visit the yard to put it against the stone and see if you like the look.

• Cindy 01:07AM, Apr 11 2009 Important question re: installation of giallo ornamental with very prominent horizontal black veining... shouldn't all pieced be installed with the veining going the same direction? My installer said it doesn't matter which direction the granite is placed. Wrong... you can tell immediately... We chose the specific slab from which to cut the pieces, but I never expected that the horizontal look of the granite would be upside down. Is this an industry standard? Just cut pieces from a slab like a cookie cutter? I think they just wanted to make cuts that were economical, regardless of the look? Your opinion?

He just wanted to save as much material as possible while compromising the finished look. You can do this when the stone is very consistent. Because it will look identical no matter from which part of the slab you will cut.
