lynn: We classify it as slate. There is battles among geologists trying to answer this question. The important point here is that the stone is mostly silicate with great abrasive resistance.

Is Pietra Cardosa granite or soapstone? I bought what I thought was a honed granite, but the installer said he thought it was soapstone. I have soapstone in my kitchen and it was NOT sealed. I use mineral oil a few times a year and love it. I had the Pietra Cordosa sealed, thinking it was honed granite. Now, I wonder. Different sites on the web call it limestone, slate, granite. What is it?

Occasionally, I use a rag damp with mineral oil, and I wipe down the entire stone. It will darken the stone, temporarily, and I think it looks fantastic - but no, it will not remove any stains. They will eventually reappear!

meg: Slate cannot be polished to a high gloss.

Also, no amount of sealer, and no amount of prompt wiping up keeps oily foods from leaving dark marks. I'm hoping to oil the whole thing to even out the blotches

I must agree with Christina. ANY OILY SUBSTANCE will leave a permanent mark on pietra cardosa. We started getting dark marks on our pietra the first night after installation. It is an extremely, extremely rustic look.

Christina: You are correct Christina. Slate won't really do too well in a regular kitchen environment. There are customers though, that appreciate the way it wears and ages. Part of the look I suppose.

WARNING!! Though beautiful, may not be a good choice for a working kitchen. It absorbs oil which will stain,it scratches VERY easily,& it will ding & pit. I had it installed & within 2 months it looked very worn.I did contact AG with my concerns, & was assured that it was properly sealed upon installation.
