C.J.: What color will be the cabinets? Generally light color cabinets go well with dark granite, and vice versa. Contrast is the key! |

We are in the process of a basement remodel with a wet bar. Going with espresso cabinets with a cream/beige floor tile. We were thinking of going with tropical brown for the countertops. Any comments or other suggestions? My thoughts on this is that a medium to dark granite would be more appropriate for a wet bar setting |

stephanie: I'm sorry I mean to write ceramic. Have you thought about slate? That is another a good option. The glass you mention sounds like an excellent idea though, the brown/gold inserts will compliment the granite. |
|

Thanks for the suggestion, did you mean ceramic, not crematic, if not what is crematic I am having such trouble with this backsplash also my walls and floor are light gold/tan. Also, the glass tile is in 12x12 with little glass squares in light brown/gold tones. Worried glass will become outdated to quick. |

waleska: Yes you seal every stone, but the "holes" are natural pits in the surface of the stone. They shouldn't be there because quarries usualy coat the surface to fill these kinds of pits. If they are tiny then don't worry about them. They don't affect the porosity of the stone. |
|

What would you recommend for antique white cabs with a cream appearance, s.s. appliances, and taupe walls, (gallery taupe or smokey taupe)? I don't want the cabs to start looking too yellow. I am trying to stay away from granite with too much gold or yellow. I'm hoping I can stay with my taupe walls because I found a color that I fell in love with. |

Kevin: Chestnut, like hickory, varies in lightness to some degree. That can be an interesting effect because some of the wood will be similar in tone to the granite, while other parts would be contrasting. As for the cabinets in the photo, to me they look like stained oak, although I'm not 100% sure. |

|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-02-11 13:11:59 |
Kevin: If you're absolutely set on Tropical Brown, then a lighter cabinet will be in order... perhaps a natural maple or even hickory would be a better choice. Basically, you want to have decent contrast between the cabinets and the stone. For Tan Brown you should be more than ok with the Walnut stain. Tan Brown is much darker than Tropical Brown. |
|
Name: Kevin | Date: 2009-02-11 12:53:02 |
So if we want to do tropical brown or Tan brown, what colors would you recommend for cabinets, floor, and backsplash? |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-02-11 09:02:00 |
Kevin: With a medium walnut stain, tropical brown and similar colors won't really show too well. Black is always an option but I doubt you want the hassles of keeping it clean (it shows dirt a lot). Perhaps you'd settle for something like Platinum Bahia. Deep brown color with a cool look to it. Ontario brown would be something like Tropical Brown but a few shades lighter. Maybe that will help. |
|
Name: Kevin | Date: 2009-02-10 18:30:58 |
Disregard my last posting. We have decided to do more of a walnut colored stain on both cabinets and floor. Thank God. What other colors are similar to Tropical Brown that would "pop" with medium walnut colored cabinets and a lighter walnut colored floor? Thanks! |
|

We have been told by our local cabinet/countertop guy that the light vs. dark issue is not one for our house. We have a very open floor plan with lots of natural light. We are going back and forth between a black based granite or a brown based granite. Would black maybe be better than brown considering dark Cherry stain, and Fruitwood maple floors? Or would you do something completely different and go with a lighter color? Thanks. |
|
All Granite and Marble - Moderator | Date: 2009-02-10 17:09:13 |
Kevin: The light vs dark question should be answered first by how much light you have available, how big and open the room is, and then by my preference ;) Tropical brown should be ok, although I would check the specific slabs you're using for any hint of green in the stone. It might not go so well with the red cabinets. |

mary: Well, the green is not really a major color in Baltic brown, but it is visible. The overall look is brown. Since you don't want green, I'd stick to Galaxy. Also noteworthy... Tropical Brown has a greenish hue to it (in most cases). |
|
Name: mary | Date: 2008-11-25 20:46:19 |
also, we were looking at Baltic brown. Would you still say the black galaxy over the baltic brown too? Our only concern is with the baltic brown, how distinct are the green tones in this color. I definetly do not want the green to stand out at all. |

Jenae: Yes, it should provide plenty of contrast, while staying in the same warm, earthy tones. |

I'm building a 56" by 90" eat-in island. Is there a edge that would deter from this being a big hunk of granite? I was steered toward demi-bullnose, but am seeing lots of sharp looking ogee on your site. I think that I was wrongly advised that ogee was for the victorian kitchen. |

I have bone cabinetry, ss appliances, med. oak trim woodwork/flooring, lots of natural light -- a pretty traditional style kitchen. Would Tropical Brown be a good pick? Any other any other non-black recommedations? |

I have hickory hardwood floors and cabinets in the kitchen. Would Tropical Brown look good? |
